Saving Manifesto

I deserve the finest things money can buy, right now. life is short so why pinch pennies my entire life only to have money when I am old and unable to enjoy it. Small amounts of money saved do not matter. I would become mortified if friends and family labeled me a tight wad.

Why bother saving money?

The true benefits of saving money are not obvious. Possessing more money is only a side effect of this habit. Saving money on trivial things allows you to spend money on the things in life that really matter. The habit of saving is a form of personal empowerment.

In February I quit my job. I had not lined up another job but decided to move out of retail and into commissioned sales. What allowed me the luxury of switching careers? The fact that I set aside 6 months worth of living expenses. It was easy since I slashed my monthly expenses over the years. The habit of saving allowed me the freedom to explore new options. An individual who wants to work and has a positive mental attitude is never wanting for work. I was able to begin a new sales career in under a week.

When you go to your local coffee house and purchase an expensive beverage each morning instead of getting it at a gas station or making it at home, you are making a choice. Over time you are choosing the beverage over starting a small business, taking a trip, or donating to charity. Those two extra hours of work needed each week to obtain a fancy drink could instead be utilized spending time with someone you care about. Which of these options will bring about more happiness? By being mindful of where your money goes, you are enriching yourself and having the maximum effect on the things you care about.

Thoughtful spending actively improves your life. By focusing on the things you value, you are creating more personal satisfaction and happiness. Wasted money is wasted potential. Money does have power to improve your life but proper money management habits are much more valuable. They reveal your priorities while enabling you to do far more of those things you love.
